The Arts at Coolnwynpin State School

The Arts program at Coolnwynpin provides students with a unique opportunity to engage in an integrated curriculum. This approach means students are accessing learning through multiple intelligences, thereby improving learning across all curriculum areas.

The units of work for each year level connect strategically with other subject areas such as English (through persuasive advertisements in Media Arts and Music), Mathematics, History (through retelling stories from the First Fleet through Dance, Drama and Music) and Science (explaining human responses to natural disasters through Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Art and Media Arts).

It is with a focus on the use of technology to enhance learning that students connect with relevant material and develop their own expressions of their understandings.  The approach to Arts education at Coolnwynpin is evidence of our STEAM (Science, Technology, English, Arts and Mathematics) focus across the school.

In addition to a highly focused and diverse curriculum, students are given multiple opportunities to participate in small group and whole school performances. These opportunities range from in school events such as Assembly, School Ceremonies and the Koala Fair to local tours and the national stage with Creative Generations: State Schools Onstage. Performances vary from Choral, Instrumental, Technology, Visual Art, Dance, Hip Hop and Drama.

Community engagement remains at the forefront of the Arts Program, ensuring the Arts continue to be an expression of current events and an opportunity to explore the past.  We welcome many guests into lessons in the Arts with local Quandamooka Elders supporting students to paint and tell stories, Graphic Designers giving advice for students when creating advertisements and dance choreographers from the local community supporting our various dance groups. We visit local Early Childhood facilities to support transition of young children into schooling, using the Music, Dance, Drama and storytelling to provide links between their Early Childhood setting and the school environment.

The key features of our Arts program are not only unique but invaluable.  Past students have gone on to participate in specialist Music, Vocal and Dance programs in High School with continued success.
